3-60. The Spleen is the root of Post-Heaven Qi; the Kidneys are the root of Pre-Heaven Qi. How do Post- and Pre-Heaven Qi mutually support each other?

Answer: Post-Heaven Qi continually replenishes Pre-Heaven Qi with the Qi derived from food. Pre-Heaven Qi assists in the production of Post-Heaven Qi by providing the heat necessary for digestion and transformation (via the Fire of the Gate of Life).

3-61. How may a deficiency of Spleen-Qi affect Kidney-Essence? What symptoms may occur in this situation?

Answer: If Spleen-Qi is deficient, not enough Qi will be produced to replenish Kidney-Essence, leading to a weakness of Kidney-Essence. This may cause fatigue, low backache, lack of appetite, tinnitus and dizziness.

3-62. What may happen to Spleen-Qi if Kidney-Yang is deficient? In this situation, what symptoms may occur? In Five-Element terms, how may this situation be described?

Answer: If Kidney-Yang is deficient, the Fire of the Gate of Life cannot warm and aid the Spleen in its function of transformation and transportation of food and fluids, resulting in symptoms such as loose stools, diarrhoea and a feeling of chilliness. Dampness may accumulate and oedema may occur. In Five-Element terms, this situation may be described as ‘Fire not producing Earth’.

3-63. Describe the role played by the Spleen and Kidneys with regards to Body Fluids.

Answer: Kidney-Yang provides the heat necessary for the Spleen to transform and transport fluids. As it transports and transforms fluids, Spleen-Qi aids the Kidneys in their role of the transformation and excretion of fluids. If Spleen-Qi cannot transform and transport fluids, these may accumulate, forming Dampness. The formation of Dampness impairs the Kidney’s function of governing Water; in turn, this further worsens the condition of Dampness.
