3-40. What may happen to the Essence if a person's mind is disturbed by emotional problems: how may this manifest?

Answer: If the Mind is perturbed by emotional problems, the Mind will be unable to direct the Essence, manifesting in a lack of motivation and a sense of permanent fatigue.

신지(神志)가 정지문제(情志問題)로 방해(妨害)되면 정(精)에 어떤 일이 발생하며, 어떠한 증상(症狀)이 나타날 수 있는가?

(답) 신지(神志)가 정지문제(情志問題)로 교란(攪亂)되면, 신지(神志)는 정(精)을 감독할 수 없어 동기부여(動機附與)의 결여(缺如), 항구적(恒久的) 피로감(疲勞感)이 나타난다.

 

3-41. Describe what happens to Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang during the menstrual cycle.

Answer: The menstrual cycle is a flow of Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang as the Kidneys are the origin of Tian Gui, which is the basis for menstrual blood. During the first half of the menstrual cycle, Yin grows to reach its maximum at ovulation. At ovulation, Yin begins to decrease and Yang to increase, reaching a maximum just before the onset of the period. This ebb and flow of Yin and Yang is determined by Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang. Ovulation marks a change from Yin to Yang (Yin has reached its maximum); the onset of the period marks a change from Yang to Yin.  

월경주기(月經週期) 동안 신음(腎陰)과 신양(腎陽)에 무슨 일이 발생하는 지를 서술하시오.

(답) 신(腎)은 월경(月經)의 기초(基礎)인 천계(天癸)의 근원(根源)이기 때문에 월경주기(月經週期)는 곧 신음(腎陰)과 신양(腎陽)의 흐름이다.  월경(月經)의 주기(週期)에서 처음 반(半)은 음(陰)이 점점 자라서 배란기(排卵期)에 최고조(最高潮)에 달하고, 배란기(排卵期)부터 음(陰)은 점점 쇠미(衰微)하고, 양(陽)은 점점 자라서 월경(月經) 직전(直前)에 최고조(最高潮)에 달한다. 이러한 음(陰)과 양(陽)의 (조수(潮水)와 같은) 성쇠(盛衰)의 변화는 신음(腎陰)과 신양(腎陽)에 의하여 결정된다. 배란기(排卵期)는 음(陰)에서 양(陽)으로의 전환을 표시하며 (음(陰)이 극(極)에 달함); 월경(月經)은 양(陽)에서 음(陰)으로의 전환을 표시한다.

 

3-42. In which two ways does the Heart play a role in the menstrual cycle?

Answer: First, the Kidneys provide the material basis (Tian Gui) for the ebb and flow of Yin and Yang, the Heart provides the impetus for the transformation of Yin to Yang and vice versa. Secondly, Heart-Qi and Heart-Blood descend during the period to promote the downward flow of blood during the period and the discharge of the eggs during ovulation.

심(心)이 월경주기(月經週期)에 두 가지 방면(方面)의 역할(役割)은?

(답) 첫째로 신(腎)은 음(陰)과 양(陽)의 성쇠(盛衰)의 변화에 대하여 물질적 기초 즉, 천계(天癸)를 제공하고, 심(心)은 음(陰)과 양(陽)의 전화(轉化)에 대한 추동력(推動力)을 제공하며 그 역(逆)도 같다. 둘째로 심기(心氣)와 심혈(心血)은 아래로 향하여 월경(月經) 중에는 하혈(下血)을 촉진시키고, 배란기(排卵期)에는 배란(排卵)을 촉진시킨다.
